In the months preceding my 17-year old dog, Muggins’ death in October last year, I had been spending a half hour or so each day free dancing to music on my mp3 player.  I loved that half hour.  It didn’t feel like exercise.  It felt like play.

The day after Muggins died, I got up before 5 a.m. because I couldn’t sleep.  I knew she’d moved on to joyful nonphysical energy but I ached from the loss of her physical presence.  It just plain hurt.

Reaching for better feelings when I got out of bed, I put on my earphones and danced.  And I cried.

I was used to having Muggins around while I danced.  In fact, I usually danced in whatever room she was in; during her last months, we had to keep a close eye on her because she’d get disoriented and wander into corners and get stuck.  Dancing alone in the too still house made my ache even deeper.

But I kept dancing.  I thought it would shift my vibration. 

As I danced, I glanced up at a plaque we have above our pantry door:  “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass … it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” With tears streaming over my cheeks, I said to Muggins, “I’m dancing, Muggins; see, I’m dancing.”

And then I didn’t dance again for over six months.

I was able to let Muggins go pretty gracefully.  I didn’t spend long feeling bad about her death.  I consciously choose thoughts about my happy times with her and about the joy I know she’s feeling now.  And then I look at my Ducky and am grateful that I attracted another wonderful Springer spaniel into my life.

Even so, I associated dancing with the raw pain I felt the morning after Muggins’ death.  So no dancing for me.

Until last week.

Laughter Replaces Tears

I decided it was time to start dancing again, memories or no memories.  I got back from walking Ducky one morning, put on my earphones, and turned on the mp3 player.  I started dancing.

Ducky went crazy.

She started barking and howling.  She stood on her back legs and spun in circles.  She leaped around the room.  She threw herself on the floor and rolled over and over.  She barked and howled some more.  She tried to jump on me, and I discouraged that, so she leaped around some more.

The whole time I danced, Ducky tried to figure out how she could join in this fun game I was playing.  And the whole time I danced, I laughed. Ducky’s antics were hilarious.

Just like that, I had a new association with dancing: laughter instead of tears.

After that delightful experience, I started noticing (thanks to law of attraction) all the ways people allow associations to limit them:

“Oh, we don’t go there because we got bad service once.”

“I don’t fly because of 9/11.”

“I don’t eat that because it made me sick once.”

“I’m not speaking to her because she made me mad last year.”

What are all these associations?  They’re vibrations that were activated at the time of the event that we’re now reactivating every time we think about the event.

The Universal Vibration Association

Association is simply bringing old misalignment into the present.

Why would we want to do that?

If we were aware of what we were doing, we wouldn’t want to do that.

So how do we turn off that negative memory and create an opportunity for a new vibrational activation?

To answer that question, I thought about why I was able to finally dance last week after over six months of avoiding it.

What got me attached to my mp3 player again was thinking about the pleasant experience of dancing.  I didn’t try to NOT think about that morning after Muggins died.  I DID think about how good dancing feels, how it energizes me, how it’s more fun than all the other available forms of exercise, how I liked the feel of pounds dropping off me (which they had been when I was dancing regularly).

In other words, I purposefully, using my thoughts, activated a new vibration for what I was doing.

Associations, if positive, can serve us because they encourage us to repeat pleasant experiences.  Negative associations, however, never serve us.  We have enough negative vibration in our present without sucking some from the past into our present too.

Be aware of how your past is impacting your present.  Check to be sure all your associations are positive, and if they’re not, find a new vibration on the subject by reaching for better thoughts about it.

The past never needs to sneak into your present and prevent you from doing something you want to do.  It doesn’t have to limit you in any way.

    This is such a good reminder about the past not needing to sneak up on us and limit us.

    Thanks, Grace–she’s having fun. And she’s always open to song ideas. She has vowed to only blip feel good songs that have an upbeat message. I’ve discovered, in helping her look for those kinds of songs, that there are a lot of sad songs out there. I appreciate the contrast. ;)
