Law of Attraction Needs No Activation
If you spend much time on law of attraction websites, you’ll see many headlines that call out:
“Activate the law of attraction!”
Or
“Use the law of attraction!”
Or
“Make the law of attraction work for you.”
You’ll also see many law of attraction experts talking about “belief in” the law of attraction. A couple weeks ago, a law of attraction “expert” who has thousands of fans on his Facebook page and a web page selling all sorts of law of attraction “helpers,” stated emphatically in a comment that law of attraction is “a philosophy.”
In an Abraham-Hicks DVD I watched last week, a workshop participant said she’d been “applying law of attraction principles” to her wellness journey.
Abraham said, “We always enjoy that terminology: ‘I’m applying law of attraction principles,’ and we say, that’s like, ‘I wrote on my list today, I’m going to apply the law of gravity. At no time whatsoever am I going to float up instead of down. When I throw things into the air, I’m going to see to it that they don’t float off into space but instead they will come down to the ground the way they’re supposed to.’”
Abraham’s point is clear. You don’t apply the law of attraction any more than you apply the law of gravity. These laws apply themselves to you.
You don’t need to believe in the law of attraction. You don’t need to use the law of attraction. You don’t need to make the law of attraction work. And you certainly don’t need to activate the law of attraction.
The other day, a person who discovered I had this blog said to me, “I like the law of attraction too.”
I thought this an interesting comment. I suppose I do like the law of attraction, and I like the law of gravity too, but I don’t think about it that way.
I think this sense that we need to become skillful at making the law of attraction work, at activating it, applying it, or using it gets in the way of what we really need to do. What we really need to do is just relax and find reasons to feel good.
The law of attraction is just the energetic principle that acts on those good feelings to pull the things we desire into our lives. It’s an “automatic pilot” law. It requires no special code or control. There’s no button to push. No special ring to wear. You don’t have to hold your mouth a certain way or say the right things in order the law of attraction to do its thing.
The energy in our universe does what it does no matter what we’re doing.
You could wake up tomorrow morning and decide, quite determinedly, that you’re going to spend your day several inches off the ground, and universal energy won’t give a hoot about your intention because the law of gravity works on that energy in a specific way that has nothing to do with you. You don’t activate or deactivate the law of gravity (at least on this planet). Instead, you live in awareness of the law of gravity.
We all develop this ability to live in awareness of gravity when we’re quite small. A few tumbles, and we’ve got it.
We use that awareness our entire lives. We don’t walk off cliffs. We don’t jump out of planes without parachutes. We don’t let go of breakable objects we’d like to keep intact.
This is all we need to do with the law of attraction—be aware of it.
Studying Abraham-Hicks or another “law of attraction” teacher is a way for us to become conscious of a law that no one bothered to tell us about when we were little. Though we came into this world with knowledge of the law, the world is currently designed like a big old eraser that wipes away all knowledge of how the universe really works.
Law of attraction isn’t a tool. It’s energy acting consistently.
When you understand that law of attraction is something that JUST IS, something that impacts you on a daily basis, whether you believe in it or not, whether you like it or not, it creates (at least it does for me) a compelling incentive to do what’s necessary to make that impact positive instead of negative.
Just as you adjust to allow for the law of gravity (you take the stairs instead of just hopping over the third floor balcony railing to reach the street) so you can have positive experiences (the experience of reaching the street with all your parts whole and in the right places), you must learn to allow for the law of attraction. You must become aware of your feelings so you’re aware of whether your thoughts are pulling in something good or something bad.
Thoughts WILL pull experiences, whether you’re thinking on purpose or not. In the two weeks preceding the accident that annihilated my ankle, I’d been thinking about how much I just wanted to lie down for a long time and not have to do anything. Truly. I was tired, and that’s what I was thinking about. Boy did law of attraction match that vibration! I “got to” lie down and not do anything for 6 weeks.
When I began to relax about thinking I needed to learn some special way to activate, use, apply, or believe in the law of attraction and instead just remain always aware of the law and how it impacts me, focusing my thoughts got easier. It still takes effort, but at no time am I unconscious of my thoughts anymore. I still think negative thoughts, but I know it, and that’s the first step to changing them to positive thoughts.
I think of my happy feelings and thoughts as my parachute. They’re what allow me to gracefully live in a world governed by the law of attraction. They’re what keep me (when I “put them on”) from going splat. When I don’t put on the happy feeling/thought parachute, the law of attraction’s match to my negative thoughts are almost as unpleasant as the law of gravity’s match to freefalling.
If you can remember that the law of attraction is a flow of energy that is always at work, no matter what you’re doing, it simplifies what you need to do to have positive experiences in your life. Your only “work” is to find a way to put on that parachute of thought. The law of attraction will do the rest.

Excellent clarification, Ande.
Like you, I’ve been amused at the sorts of ads that offer to help a person activate Law of Attraction. It’s already totally activated! haha
It’s about, as you say, living in awareness of immutable laws, whether it’s gravity or LOA, and ever taking those laws into consideration in order to rendezvous with desired results.

We’re so used to trying to make things happen, trying to fix problems, trying to get rid of “bad” stuff, to DOING something to conditions OUT THERE in order to make things better that terms like “activate” and “apply” get used to refer to a phenomenon that’s, as you say, already working and working all the time, whether we realize it or not. It boggles the mind of many to be told that you don’t need to DO anything other than relax and allow the LOA to do it for you, as long as you’re vibrational aligned with what you want. And vibrational alignment is an INSIDE JOB.

“relax and allow” — exactly, Patrice. Well said!

Thanks, Karen. “living in awareness of immutable laws”–you nailed it.

Ande
I really enjoyed this article. I’ve said the same thing many times, but not as articulately as you. I agree that it is really hard for us to ‘get’ just how simple this is. But isn’t the journey fun?

I really understand where you’re coming from on this. The Secret was my introduction to LOA, but fortunately for me I saw the one with Abe, and I was immediately drawn to Abe.
After a few sessions with Abe material, I did think back about my life and so much of it made sense, it resonated with me. Not only that, but I feel I “recognized” it all…that Law of Attraction is indeed a law, working whether or not you know about it, yes like gravity.
I am very happy to be a deliberate creator now and not just on auto pilot. I feel more in control of my life than before.
I am on a couple LOA forums, and I can’t help but chuckle at titles such as “LOA really works!” I’m sure what they really mean is “Wow, it’s so much better being a deliberate creator!”

You’re so right that when people say LOA really works, it’s funny. It’s like walking across the floor and when you reach the other side without floating to the ceiling, exclaiming, “Law of gravity really works!!”
